The Story Behind 420 – A Cannabis Holiday

Cannabis consumers have been celebrating 420 for years. But how did it all start?

The history of 420 actually starts with a group of high school students in San Rafael, California in the 1970s. These students would meet up at 4:20 pm to smoke cannabis together. They called themselves “The Waldos” and their meeting spot was by a statue of Louis Pasteur.

The term “420” first started being used in cannabis culture in the early 1990s. It became popular among cannabis consumers as a code word to talk about cannabis without getting caught.

Since then, 420 has become a global phenomenon. Every year on April 20th, cannabis consumers around the world celebrate cannabis culture. They hold events, smoke together, and just enjoy the plant.
