Slave Haven Underground Railroad Museum

The moment you enter the white clapboard house converted into the Slave Haven Underground Railroad Museum, you will view exhibits of advertisements, auctions, and relics that help illustrate the tale of slavery and the Underground Railroad made by Jacob Burkle, a livestock trader and bakery owner.

Jacob Burkle constructed the Burkle Estate in 1849 and made it available to enslaved people providing refuge, a place to rest, and any other sort of aid that he could offer.

The house features furnishings from the 19th century, but its main feature is the hidden cellar and trap doors that provided safety for the those escaping slavery. They spent days living in this dim cellar while they waited in silence for boats to carry them to various way stations upriver on their journey to freedom in the northern states.

After descending down the cellar and kneeling on the brick floor of this little space, you gain a lot of perspective on the deplorable conditions people had to suffer in, on their way to freedom.

The trip provides details and various insights on the slave trade, their message system, and travel habits, collected through Burkle and statements from various people who sought refuge in the estate.

Graceland Mansion

The entryway of Graceland Mansion, the old house of Elvis Presley, will be your first stop. From here, you can see Elvis’ living room, dining room, stairways, and mother’s bedroom. Special visitors were frequently greeted here in the foyer before being shown to the living room, where the guests awaited Elvis to greet them.

The famous Jungle Room, with its emerald green shag carpeting, Polynesian vibe, and exotically carved wood, can be admired as you return upstairs via the extravagant staircase.

The entrance to the basement used to be in this room. It was built onto the back of the house in the 1960s as part of one of Elvis’ home improvement projects. At first, it was a screened-in porch, but a few years later, it was enclosed as a room.

As you visit Vernon Presley’s office after exploring the Graceland Mansion, explore the other fantastic features of the 14-acre estate. Colonel Tom Parker oversaw Elvis Presley’s career, but his father, Vernon Presley, oversaw his private affairs. His office was in this building. Mr. Presley was in charge of managing and staffing Graceland’s grounds and all aspects of Elvis Presley’s personal finances.
